California-based, Memphis-raised RnB/soul duo Mulherin have spent this summer launching crystal-clean RnB cut after cut; frequently shared characteristics include piano blooming alongside soulful harmonies reflecting on the emotional “no man’s land” that exists between the shifting fissures of affinity and conflict.
Examples of this territory of romantic anxiousness can be found across the group’s catalog to date, the latest being ODDS.
ODDS continues with anglings that this time dwell not on a relationship ended, but upon the unsureness that marks a friendship that may (or may not) become something more. With heavier bass offsetting familiarly sweetened summer sounds of guitar and piano, the tune is as much ballad as bite with vivid comparisons that consider all possibilities. “Loving is just Russian roulette for two, but I don’t wanna pull it you’re not bulletproof.”
